Overview
Scenic Acres is on the west side of NW Calgary, with Arbour Lake across Crowchild Trail, Tuscany across Stoney Trail and Silver Springs across Nose Hill Drive. No road runs along its south edge. Bowness, with Bowness Park, lies beyond it, and Baker Park sits at that end of the community, on the valley floor.
Undeveloped land runs along the Bow valley past the south-west stretch of Stoney Trail, and Ranchlands, Royal Oak and Valley Ridge each meet Scenic Acres at a corner. The community is in Ward 1, and nearly every street name in it starts with Sc: Scenic, Scurfield, Scimitar, Scotia, Schooner.
Over the twelve months to August 2026, 86 homes sold in Scenic Acres, and 70 of them, 81.4%, were detached houses. The typical detached price was $796,500, and half of those houses sold within 22 days. Semi-detached homes made up 12 more sales, at a typical $550,000. The last 4 were row and townhouse homes, and no apartment sold.
Nobody here pays a residents or homeowners association fee. The community’s extra landscaping comes from a City of Calgary special tax on every residential property in Scenic Acres, $66.83 for 2026, and it arrives on the property tax bill.
David’s take
The vibe
Built through the 1980s and 1990s
The City’s population counts show nobody living in Scenic Acres until 1982, when 512 people had moved in. Building started on the south-east streets and worked north and west. By the 2021 census, 39% of the community’s homes dated from 1981 to 1990 and 54% from 1991 to 2000. The Scenic Acres Community Association says it formed in 1985, “with only about 10% of the community developed.”
The population peaked at 9,608 in 2002. The number of homes has held at about 2,900 since then, while the number of people living in them has drifted down: the 2021 census counted 7,850.
Owners who stayed
At the 2021 census, 78% of Scenic Acres residents gave the same address as five years before, where the Calgary figure was 58%. People aged 65 or older made up 23% of the community, next to 13% citywide. Home ownership ran to 92% of households, compared with 69% across the city, and just 42% of those owners still carried a mortgage (Calgary: 65%). Median household income came to $134,000, where Calgary’s was $98,000.
LEAF and the special tax
Bylaw 2M2026, passed by Council on February 24, 2026, puts an enhanced landscape maintenance tax on every residential property in Scenic Acres. It appears as its own line on the property tax bill. For 2026 it is $66.83, up from $63.65 in 2025.
The tax goes back to 2013, after a petition across the community won the support of two-thirds of property owners, the share the City needs before it will levy one. Each year’s tax rests on that year’s Council bylaw. Owners also decide every five years, in a reaffirmation vote, whether it carries on, and the association reports that they kept it in 2018 and 2023, with 92% and then 90% of the votes cast in favour. Any owner can start a petition to end it. From one year to the next, the association can request a change of no more than five per cent, which Council approves.
The community association runs the work as its LEAF programme, short for Landscape Enhancement and Appreciation Fund. The City’s 2026 notice lists what it pays for: mowing and trimming of the grass areas, sports fields included, curb sweeping and spring and fall cleanups of the parks, and seasonal flowers and winter displays in 38 planters and 23 in-ground flower beds.
Membership in the Scenic Acres Community Association is a separate matter from the tax. It is optional, and each membership lasts a year. Where a home belongs to a condo corporation, its condo fee comes on top of the tax.
Baker Park, the escarpment and the ravine
In the City’s description, Baker Park sits “across the Bow River from Bowness Park” and is “the most popular park for outdoor weddings.” It is at 9333 Scenic Bow Rd NW, at the south end of the community on the valley floor, on the site of the former Baker Centre tuberculosis institution. It covers 12 hectares, with picnic areas, pathways, a grass amphitheatre, a river observation point, washrooms and a disc golf course. The Greenway and the Trans Canada Trail both run through it.
The Scenic Acres Escarpment, a City park left largely as natural area, lies between the houses and Baker Park, and the City’s Scenic Acres Ravine park keeps more natural area inside the community. Dogs have three City off-leash areas inside the boundary, two small ones near Crowchild Trail and a larger one along Stoney Trail on the west edge. Bowmont Park’s off-leash areas are across Nose Hill Drive, in Silver Springs.
For organised sport, the City’s fields inside the community include four ball diamonds, seven soccer fields, two tennis courts and a basketball court.
The community centre and Crowchild Twin Arena
The community association’s centre is at 8825 Scurfield Drive NW. It has a main hall for rentals, two beach volleyball courts and the East Field, where the association builds a large rink each winter. The association’s community garden is beside the centre.
Crowchild Twin Arena, at 185 Scenic Acres Drive NW, is inside Scenic Acres as well. By the arena’s own account, it was built in 1981, opened in January 1982 and has two rinks, Red and Blue. The same account gives Scenic Acres, Silver Springs and Varsity a one-third share each.
Groceries across Crowchild Trail
Inside Scenic Acres, the shopping comes down to a gas station with a convenience store on Scenic Acres Boulevard and a pharmacy on Scurfield Drive, with no supermarket. The Crowfoot shops, with a Safeway and a Calgary Co-op among them, are across Crowchild Trail in Arbour Lake, and so are the Crowfoot Library and the Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot. The Home Depot on Nose Hill Drive is in Tuscany, and the strip centres on Silver Springs Boulevard are in Silver Springs.
Housing stock
In the 2021 census, 90% of occupied homes in Scenic Acres were single-detached, where the Calgary figure was 55%.
The attached homes are on a handful of streets. Townhouse complexes are on Scimitar Heath, Scimitar Circle and Scimitar Rise, on Scenic Gardens, on Scenic Acres Terrace and on Scotia Landing. Duplex units are on Scimitar View, Scimitar Landing, Scimitar Court and Scimitar Point. There are no apartment condos, and the two seniors’ residences on Scurfield Drive are the only multi-storey residential buildings.
Nobody has applied since January 2024 to build rowhouses, townhouses, semi-detached homes or apartments in Scenic Acres. The development permit applications filed here are almost all for houses already standing, among them secondary suites, home businesses and a garage with a backyard suite above it.
