Overview

MacEwan Glen’s south edge is Nose Hill Park. Two local streets, MacEwan Park View NW and MacEwan Glen Drive NW, run along the park, and toward Shaganappi Trail the back of the house lots on MacEwan Park View meets it with no road in between.

In the twelve months to August 2026, 61 detached houses sold here at a typical $630,000. They were 88.4% of the 69 sales, and the rest were 5 row and townhouse homes and 3 semi-detached homes. MacEwan Glen has no apartment buildings, so no apartment sold. Across all 69 sales the typical price was $590,000, and it took 18 days for half of them to sell.

On its other three sides MacEwan Glen stops at a major road, with a different community beyond each: Hidden Valley north of Country Hills Boulevard NW, Sandstone Valley east of 14 Street NW and Edgemont west of Shaganappi Trail NW. This is Ward 3. Every street here carries the MacEwan name, from MacEwan Drive to MacEwan Valley Road, and every address is NW. The City’s name for the community is MacEwan Glen. The community association, Calgary Transit’s route names and the City’s property assessments shorten that to MacEwan, so you’ll see both.

There is no school building inside MacEwan Glen and no community hall. It has no residents association or homeowners association fee, and the community association it shares with Sandstone Valley is optional.

David’s take

The vibe

MacEwan Glen is mostly detached houses from the 1980s and early 1990s, on the slope that comes down off Nose Hill. The ground is highest at the south-west corner, by the park and Shaganappi Trail, and lowest at the north-east corner, by Country Hills Boulevard and 14 Street.

Nose Hill Park along the south edge

Nose Hill Park runs along the whole south side of MacEwan Glen, about 1.4 kilometres. The park dates from 1980 and covers 1,129 hectares, by the City’s figures.

Of the communities around the park, MacEwan Glen is the only one not separated from it by Shaganappi Trail, 14 Street or John Laurie Boulevard. Near Shaganappi Trail, the edge is the back of the house lots on MacEwan Park View NW, with no road between those yards and the park. Further east it is MacEwan Park View itself, and then MacEwan Glen Drive NW as far as 14 Street. Along those two streets the park is across a two-lane residential street.

Trails lead into the park from the MacEwan Park View end: one official trail that meets the street, and several informal dirt trails. No paved pathway crosses into the park from MacEwan Glen.

There is no City parking lot for the park on the MacEwan Glen side. The part of the park that meets MacEwan Glen is not an off-leash area, and there is no City off-leash area inside MacEwan Glen. The nearest are in Hidden Valley, across Country Hills Boulevard, in Sandstone Valley, across 14 Street, and further south inside Nose Hill Park.

A shared association and no special tax

The City charges a special landscaping tax in some communities, and Edgemont, across Shaganappi Trail, is one of them. MacEwan Glen is not, and neither is Hidden Valley, across Country Hills Boulevard. MacEwan Glen has no residents association or homeowners association fee.

The community association is the Sandstone MacEwan Community Association, shared with Sandstone Valley on the other side of 14 Street. Joining is optional and costs $30 a household for a year. The association says it receives no homeowners association fees and relies on memberships and casino funds.

The association has no building. The two outdoor rinks it runs, one boarded for hockey and one for pleasure skating, and its community garden are all across 14 Street in Sandstone Valley. A garden bed takes a membership plus $25 a year.

The two townhouse complexes are condominiums, so a home in either one comes with a condo fee. Each home has its own title, and your lawyer goes through it before you close. How to check an address yourself is in the post on Calgary HOA fees.

Built from 1981

The land came into Calgary in two pieces, the southern part in 1972 and the rest in 1979. Houses went up from 1981, and the City’s 1982 count was the first with residents in it: 296 people. City assessment data dates 58.2% of MacEwan Glen’s residential properties to the 1980s and 41.7% to the 1990s, and all but two were built by 1999.

The streets named MacEwan Glen (MacEwan Glen Drive, Road, Way, Close and Place) are in the south-east, by 14 Street and the park, and their detached houses are the oldest, at a typical 1981. Construction went north and west from there. The detached houses on the MacEwan Park streets are the newest, at a typical 1992.

According to the community association, the name honours John Walter Grant MacEwan, a Calgary mayor and Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Owners who have been here a while

In the 2021 census 86% of households here were owners, where Calgary’s share is 69%, and fewer than half of them, 48%, were carrying a mortgage (Calgary: 65%). Three residents in four, 74%, were living where they had lived five years earlier (Calgary: 58%).

Two-person households were the most common size, 41% of the total (Calgary: 32%), and 18% of residents were 65 or over (Calgary: 13%). Median household income in 2020 was $104,000, against $98,000 for the city. The census counted 4,740 people, down from a high of 5,701 in the City’s 1999 count.

What is inside, and what isn’t

The shops are in one strip centre at 16 MacEwan Dr NW, where MacEwan Drive meets 14 Street. It has a Calgary Co-op gas bar, a pub, a pharmacy, a restaurant, a liquor store, a cannabis store, and hair and nail salons. There is no supermarket in MacEwan Glen.

The park in the middle of the community, at 280 MacEwan Dr NW, is a school reserve with no school on it. It has two tennis courts, one of them lined for pickleball too, three soccer fields, a ball diamond and a playground. The City has twelve park sites in MacEwan Glen, six of them with playground equipment, and natural areas along the north side toward Country Hills Boulevard.

No community hall, rink, pool, library or place of worship is inside MacEwan Glen.

Housing stock

City of Calgary assessment data for 2026 shows 1,515 detached houses in MacEwan Glen, on lots that are typically about 4,600 square feet. In the 2021 census, single-detached houses were 85% of occupied homes (Calgary: 55%), row houses 10% and semi-detached homes 4%.

The attached homes are in a few places. Two townhouse condominium complexes have 115 units between them: 45 on MacEwan Park Heights NW, built in 1989, and 70 on MacEwan Ridge Villas NW, built in 1992. There are 62 half-duplexes, nearly all of them on MacEwan Park Way NW, MacEwan Park Road NW and the 500 block of MacEwan Drive NW. A rental townhouse site at 400 MacEwan Dr NW dates from 1982. There are no apartment buildings.

Among the homes sold in the twelve months to August 2026, the typical build year was 1988, for detached houses and for all sales alike. Edgemont’s typical build year was also 1988, and Hidden Valley’s was 1997. Detached houses were 88.4% of MacEwan Glen’s sales, a larger share than in Hidden Valley (82.9%) or Edgemont (73.6%).

From January 2024 to early September 2026, nobody applied to the City for a development permit to build a new house, townhouse or multi-unit building in MacEwan Glen. The applications that did come in were for things like decks, setbacks, home businesses, a basement suite and a second-storey addition.

“MacEwan Glen has no school inside it, so I'd look up each designated school and ask the board about the bus before you book a showing. I'd do it early: half the homes that sold in the twelve months to August 2026 took 18 days or less.”
